Mail online is an
online news article. They use very formal language, for example “These are some
of the young German exchange students who had been on their way home from a
week-long trip in Barcelona”. They also include a lot of detail in their text
as this helps them look more professional whereas if they were to add very
little detail it would be too brief and may not look formal. They use the font
Arial as this is a recognised formal font and the colour is black. This will
help the article look smarter and this may also help to make more trustworthy.
The size of the writing is small as this helps make the article look more
complex as large writing usually is used in entertainment articles like
BuzzFeed. The layout is portrait as this helps to make the article look more
professional as a landscape article would be used for a more informal website.
They add around 2 images under every paragraph, they do this because it
provides a visual aid for the audience as some people may not understand the
text. Also this helps to catch the reader’s eye as they are more likely to see
an image before they read the text. Columns are used as this is something you
would find in more serious article like The Guardian which is well known for
being professional and serious this will also help to make Mail online look as
formal. This also helps to allow more information in a short space in the
articles. They use captions under the images in the article as this helps the
audience to understand the images if they are not straight forward enough. They
don’t use any pull quotes as all of their quotes are incorporated into the text
because this makes it simple and smother to read. They try to include at least
one video into every article as this allows the readers to receive information
from different areas like text, images and videos. They also have comments,
like and sharing options as this helps to make the article more interactive
also this promotes the website as people can share the article with their
friends. They use mainly medium shots in the article as this is a simple shot
and doesn’t overcomplicate the article which would be bad for people who may
not be able to follow the article as well as others. They also use some close
up shots if they need an image to show a specific person or to show emotional
detail in there face. They use a white background as this makes the article
look more simple and formal. The purpose of the article is to inform the
readers. I know this because the main articles they post are about current
affairs around the world.
BuzzFeed is an
online web article. The article above is formal as the sentences are very
straight forward, for example “In the absence of factual information furnished
to the mainstream press”, this sentence uses very formal words rather than
slang and other informal language like saying “in the absence of factual
information” rather than “they haven’t given us any info”, this also make the
article look more serious as they are talking about Bruce Jenner wanting to be
a woman and talking in an informal and humorous manner would be offensive to
some people. The font they use is Helvetica which is a modern font, they used a
modern font because it is a simpler and more relaxed font which make the
article look like an easier read whereas a serif font would be found in a
traditional style newspaper like the article and this makes it look more
complex. The heading and subheading is in bold because they are the first thing
the audience will read and if it is in bold then in is more likely to grab the
audience’s attention. Hyperlinks are coloured blue e.g. “even some
Kardashian-Jenners themselves in the past”, this is because this helps the
audience to find it easily and helps them read more about a certain article if
they didn’t find what they are looking for in the article. The article is
portrait because this shows that it is a formal article discussing a serious
issue and as they are informing the audience unlike a landscape article which
would most likely be used for entertainment. They use captions under the
pictures as this helps the audience to understand the image if they cannot
understand straight away. They haven’t included any pull quotes as they use
quotes in the text, they do this because it makes it easier for the reader to
understand the text and makes the article more fluent. They don’t have any page
numbers as the article continuous and just extends downward. In the article they
use lots of different shot types as the images were most likely taken by
paparazzi and it was not an organised photo shoot. However the images that are
theirs are either close ups or medium shots as these help to show emotions and
it makes the images simpler. They use mainly bright colours as this makes the
article more lively, this may help to show readers that it is a fun article and
informal. The main purpose of the article is to entertain as they have lots of
interesting articles as well as memes and quizzes. They also inform the reader
about current affairs and celebrity news. Sometimes they have interactive
elements in the article, for example the quizzes are interactive elements.
Sometimes they also include videos and they let you comment on articles.
